Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences is a regional association of research, engineering and design, as well as manufacturing and infrastructure maintenance organizations spreading over 7 regions, 2 territories and 4 national republics and occupying the total area of more than 10 million sq. kilometers.SB RAS consists of a number of scientific centers located in Novosibirsk, Tomsk, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Ulan-Ude, Kemerovo, Tumen and Omsk, as well as some research institutions located in Barnaul, Chita and Kyzyl. SB RAS incorporates about 100 research, engineering, and design institutes working on physical, mathematical, technical, chemical and biological sciences, as well as the earth, humanitarian and economical sciences. About one half of the scientific potential is concentrated in the Novosibirsk Scientific Center SB RAS. Data communication network of the SB RAS (DCN SB RAS) is a regional academic network interconnecting research institutions and organizations of SB RAS, institutions of the Medical and Agricultural Academy of Sciences, State Scientific Center for biotechnologies and virusology “Vector”, along with a number of other research, educational, medical, cultural and social organizations. DCN SB RAS is being developed since the first half of 1990th until now. It is one of the key factors determining the efficiency of the whole SB RAS operation. The structure of DCN is aimed at the informational integration of all subdivisions of the SB RAS. Operation of the DCN SB RAS is supported by the Russian Fund for Fundamental Research as well as other organizations and granting bodies and is aiming at:
- Providing high quality internet access to all their users;
- Creation, collection and systematization of the informational resources of SB RAS.
Joint usage of the information and telecommunication resources and informational and computational technologies by the SB RAS organizations is regulated by international agreements, common law and corporate practices determining the ways our software, hardware, data and networks are being operated, maintained and protected.
Since it’s establishment DCN SB RAS evolved to the largest corporate research and educational networks in Russia by the number of users, data exchange volumes, diversity and quality of services. DCN SB RAS is tightly interacting with a number of national and international projects, aimed at global network development for the needs of academic community, thus connecting the world largest research centers by high speed broadband infrastructure (RbNet, RASNet, RUNNet, GLORIAD, GEANT, RUHEP among others)
