History of Institute


The Institute of Forest of the USSR Academy of Sciences was founded in 1944. It was intended to head and coordinate the theoretical studies which reveal forest nature and are directed to establish the scientific base of forest management. As an organizer and the first director of the Institute (1944 - 1958) the Academician Sukachev was.

In 1958 the Institute was moved from Moscow to Krasnoyarsk and was included to the system of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Being faced the new tasks the Institute was named as the Institute of Forest and Wood of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

The Institute of Forest and Wood SB USSR Academy of Sciences was supervised by the Academician A.B.Zhukov (1958-1977), the Academician A.S.Isaev (1977-1988), E.S.Petrenko (1988-1994).

In 1967 the name of its organizer was given to the Institute.

In connection with the reorganization of the USSR Academy of Sciences the Institute entered the Siberian Branch of the of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 1992 it was named : V.N.Sukachev Institute of Forest of SB of RAS. The Director of the Institute since 1994 the corresponding- member of RAS Evgenii Alexandrovich Vaganov is.

The Siberian International Centre for Ecological Research of Boreal Forests was established at the Institute in 1991.

The Institute has 4 sectors which contain 17 laboratories.

The Institute has the net of field expedition stations in the Siberian area.

There are two specialized scientific councils in the Institute: for defence of candidate and doctor theses.

The Institute is the leading academic scientific institution of the country in the forest science.
