	TO STRUGGLE IN ORDER TO SURVIVE Primary results of the trade union protest action.
	HIGH RECOGNITION Soon the Melentiev Institute of Energy Systems of the SB RAS headed by Corresponding Member of RAS N.Voropay, will celebrate the 40th anniversary. Forty is the age of active creativity, and the time of comprehension of all the things made as well as of self-appraisal of capabilities for further achievements.
	LOGICAL APPROACH IN THE CONTROL THEORY In 2000, the Institute of System Dynamics and Control Theory (ISDCT) of the Irkutsk Scientific Center of the SB RAS celebrates the twenty-fifth anniversary. The interview with the Director of the Institute, Corresponding Member of the RAS S.Vasiliev "From artificial intelligence to strategic solutions in economics" published in the previous "SiS" issue was devoted to this event. Today our newspaper proceeds with the anniversary publications.
	IN THE INTERESTS OF THE IRKUTSK REGION AND THE BAIKAL AREA From the moment of the ISDCT formation, applied works were mainly oriented to creation of a series of the application packages for the solution of different kind problems in optimization, control and stability as well as in a series of the others, with usage of these packages in the research of the space and air engineering problems. However, as far as 25 years ago, within the framework of the Department of Systems Theory and Cybernetics, a research work under scientific leadership of V.Matrosov was conducted. The studies concerned automation of the simulation and the problem solving for optimization of fuel and energy complex (in cooperation with Siberian Energy Institute of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences), as well as mathematical modeling and forecasting of social and economic development of Irkutsk Region.
	THE "CYBERNETICS" EDUCATIONAL AND SCIENTIFIC CENTER IS 20 The Educational and Scientific Center of Mathematical Cybernetics, System Analysis and Operation Research (the "Cybernetics" ESC) was created on the basis of both the Institute of Mathematics and Economics of the Irkutsk State University (the IME of the ISU) and the Institute of System Dynamics and Control Theory (ISDCT) of the SB RAS.
	NONSTANDARD GREAT LAVRENTIEV The Fourth Siberian Congress on Applied and Industrial Mathematics (INPRIM-2000) is associated with name of an outstanding scientist, one of the organizers and the first chairman of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences, the Honorary Citizen of the Novosibirsk City, Academician M.A.Lavrentiev (1900 - 1980) and was dedicated to his memory. Director of the A.P.Ershov Institute of Informatics Systems of the SB RAS, Doctor Sc. (Physics and Mathematics) A.Marchuk has spoken at the Congress with the report "M.A.Lavrentiev`s Role in the Formation of Engineering of Our Country".
	OUTCOMES OF THE SR-2000 The 13th Russian Conference on Applications of Synchrotron Radiation (SR) at the Novosibirsk Academgorodok is over. Its opening was held on July 17 at the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the SB RAS, on the basis of which the Siberian Synchrotron Radiation Center works.
	SCIENTIFIC READINGS IN MEMORY OF ACADEMICIAN V.SOCHAVA June 20, 2000, the Seventh Scientific Readings in memory of the founder and the first director of the Institute of Geography of the SB RAS, Academician Victor Borisovich Sochava, dedicated to his 95th anniversary have been held at Irkutsk. The employees of the Institutes of the Irkutsk Scientific Center (Institute of Geography, Limnologic Institute, Siberian Institute of Plant Physiology and Biochemistry of the SB RAS) as well as of the Geography Faculty of the Irkutsk State University have taken part in the event.
	CONFERENCE ON MESOMECHANICS IN CHINA The University of the Siyan City, one of the historical capitals of China, an event relevant for worldwide scientific community such as the International Conference "Mesomechanics-2000" has been held. This conference is held every two years under the resolution of the International Organizing Committee and is devoted to creation and development of the novel science of mesomechanics.
	THE BEST CHEMISTS OF EUROPE? Colin Russell, the Honored Professor, the Outside Professor of the History of Science and Engineering Chair of the Open University of Milton Canes, Buckinghamshire, Great Britain, tells how the hundred of the best chemists of Europe was selected.
	HIGH STANDARDS OF NSU Entrance examinations at the Novosibirsk State University have been finished. We have met with Natalia Vladimirovna Dulepova, Senior Lecturer, the NSU Pro-Rector on Education, when the majority of the entrants took their last examination i.e. a test on Russian. The situation was already clear.
	MOLECULAR DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGIES OF FUTURE The University project "Molecular design and environment protecting technologies", chief of the project being Academician V.Boldyrev, has been supported by the grant of one million dollars. About the essence of the project, its strategy, and how it has become possible to anticipate other Universities, there is a conversation with Professor V.Ovcharenko, responsible for the scientific part of the project.
	ON PLANNING PRINCIPLES FOR STUDENTS ADMISSION TO THE NOVOSIBIRSK STATE UNIVERSITY An Appeal of the Scientific Council of the Mechanics and Mathematics Faculty of the Novosibirsk State University (MMF NSU) to the NSU Scientific Council and to the Presidium of the SB RAS.
	TELE-EDUCATION IN THE 21th CENTURY From July 10 to July 16, the Seventh Worldwide International Conference of the teachers working jointly through the Internet has been held in Peking. About 450 delegates from 64 countries, teachers and senior pupils, were present at the Conference.
	NEWS FROM TOMSK
	THE BOOK CULTURE HISTORY OF THE EASTERN REGIONS OF RUSSIA The first volume of the collective "Essays of the History of Book Culture of Siberia and Far East. The End of the 18th Century – 90ths of the 19th Century" has been issued in Novosibirsk. It has marked the beginning of a series of the volumes devoted to this field of the culture of our country, which is step-by-step accomplished by the Book Science Department of the State Public Scientific and Technical Library (SPSTL) of the SB RAS under the leadership of Doctor Sc. (History), Professor S.Paichadze.
	RUSSIA IN THE MIRROR OF "SIBERIA" The first for this year issue of the "Siberia" magazine has been put out. There is no doubt that many publications of the magazine will attract one`s attention.

	HEALING "AURA" OF WINDOW PLANTS Recently the Novosibirsk Book Publishing House has issued an excellent book, which one would be a good thing to read for each person having at a window-sill even a pair of flowerpots with houseplants. It is called "Phytoncidic plants in an interior (Making air healthy by means of plants)". It has been written by the employees of the Central Siberian Botanical Garden of the SB RAS N.Tsibulia and T.Fershalova.
	"WHEN OBJECTS AND WORDS COME TO LOSE THEIR MEANINGS OF TRUE, THEN POETS WILL COME TO THE EARTH FOR THE THINGS TO RENEW" This stanza from the song by Novella Matveeva, maybe, is the answer to a question that was raised by persons who have gathered to the presentation of the Literary Arts Exhibition "Poetry and prose of Academgorodok". The question raised has sounded as: " What for? Why a poet writes his verses and why a prose writer composes a literary history? ". Moreover: why it happens to the scientists who study exclusively the material nature of a world?
	THE 12th OLYMPIC July 9, the next Annual Triathlon Competitions have been held.
	ACADEMIC ROUND 2000 Already the eighth time the "Tennis Club of Academgorodok" (TCA) and the Children`s Tennis School received the guest tennis players from 25 cities of Russia as well as from the neighboring and far abroad on their tennis-courts.
	THE TEAM OF OUR YOUTH From June 25 to June 30, the Final Competitions of the Sports and Athletics Meeting (Spartakiade) of Working People of the Russian Federation have been held in Moscow, where the women`s volleyball team of the Novosibirsk Academgorodok took part.
