	NEWS
	THE ACADEMICIAN A.P.ERSHOV LECTURE-HALL OPENING One of these days solemn opening of the Academician A.P.Ershov Lecture-Hall has been held at the Novosibirsk State University. The auditorium N 402 at the main building of the University is repaired using the facilities of the "NovoSoft" corporation.
	AS IF A MEETING WITH LIVING PERSON A book of memoirs dedicated to the centenary of the founder of the SB RAS Academician Michail Alekseevich Lavrentiev has been published.
	ON THE VISIT OF THE BRITISH COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVES A two-day visit to Novosibirsk of the adviser of the British Council Mr. E.Henderson and of the Moscow representative of the British Council Mrs. C.Griffin has begun. Meetings with chiefs of book-publishing and book-trade leading enterprises are scheduled within the framework of the visit.
	"THE MALTSEV READINGS" CONFERENCE From November 16 to November 19, 2000 the traditional International Conference "The Maltsev Readings" has been held at the S.L.Sobolev Institute of Mathematics of the SB RAS.
	PRESENTATION AT THE NSU December 5, 2000 presentation of the Educational and Scientific Center founded within the framework of the project "INTEGRATION" has been held at the Novosibirsk State University.
	"SIBERIAN" MODERNIZATION FOR A NMR SPECTROMETER In many research organizations 10 to 20 years old electromagnetic NMR spectrometers are kept on use. One of the most vulnerable parts of these obsolete spectrometers is fitted specialized computers, which do not satisfy customers because of low reliability (owing to physical aging of the equipment) and intellectual aging of their software. The authors of this article have offered and developed an inexpensive modernization of a pulse NMR spectrometer. The elaboration has been carried out in the laboratories headed by Yu.Krieger and V.Sokolov.
	EXTENT OF INVESTMENTS GROWS The seminar "Investments in Regions: Experience and Problems" has been held at Baikal. Chiefs of economic sphere of the Region, representatives of banks and stock companies, scientists have participated in the seminar.
	GERMAN EXPERIENCE FOR THE BAIKAL ECOLOGY The International Seminar "Ecological Estimation and Ecological Examination, as Instruments for Realization of the Law on Baikal " has been held in Irkutsk. The Institute of Geography of the SB RAS and the German Federal Department on Environmental Protection became the initiators of the seminar. To the point, the seminar in Irkutsk was sequential in the problem discussion started in Berlin at the end of October.
	AT THE PRESIDIUM OF THE SB RAS At the Presidium Meeting of December 7, the results of complex examination of two Institutes of Irkutsk have been considered, such as the Limnological Institute and the Institute of Geography of the SB RAS.
	IS IT POSSIBLE TO MAKE SCIENCE ... WITHOUT BOOKS? At the recent meeting at the Novosibirsk Scientific Center with the RAS President Academician Yu.Osipov a question has been raised having huge importance for all Russian Academic community, and somewhat, for all Russian science. Academician V.Nakoriakov has reminded all present of a pitiable situation with issuing foreign books on different fields of science in Russian. Under circumstances of acute deficit of foreign scientific periodicals, he has said, the special importance is gained by availability of transactions, in which definite stages of appropriate science development are summarized.
	THE PROJECT AND ITS FULFILMENT About the First Competition for the scientific projects on applied researches for young scientists of the Novosibirsk Region.
	TOWARDS THE TACIS PROJECT COMPLETION In November of this year realization of one of the most interesting and scaled projects within the framework of the European Union TACIS (Technical Assistance for CIS) program EDRUS 9602 "Regional Politics Directional on Reduction of Social and Economic as well as Legal Asymmetry" has been completed. Considerable part of work under this Project was carried out by the Russian experts of the Institute of Economics and Industrial Engineering of the SB RAS. As an opinion on low productivity of the TACIS Program occurs, we shall try to deny this point of view basing on the results of this Project.
	FOLKLORE MONUMENTS OF THE PEOPLES OF SIBERIA AND FAR EAST At the Institute of Philology of the SB RAS (Novosibirsk) the Scientific and Practical School - Seminar on Preparation Volumes of the series "Folklore Monuments of the Peoples of Siberia and Far East" for Publication has been held.
	LET THERE BE LIGHT! "Imagine, by night the cosmonauts see glowing of the largest megacities from the orbit, only at the place of Russia is a huge dark spot, so our cities are miserably lighted up. But it is just remediable ". With such words leading scientific researcher of the Academic Institute of Thermophysics Igor Ulanov turns a switch on and the laboratory room is illuminated with greenish glow and an odor of ozone is slightly felt.
	TO FOGGY GERMANY WE CARRY FRUITS OF LEARNINGS... At the Institute of Earth Crust the All-Russian Conference "Underground Waters of the East of Russia" has been completed. For the 16th time the hydrogeologists of different places of our country have discussed the results obtained in this research field, have exchanged with ideas and focussed attention on the most urgent questions.
	BOG ECOSYSTEMS OF ASIAN RUSSIA The next fifth number of the "Siberian Ecological Journal" dedicated to bog ecosystems of Asian Russia has been issued.
	TO THE INTERNET FOR CERTIFICATE At the Institute of Remote Education (IRE) of the Kemerovo State University the second stream of the students has begun to study.
	UNCOMMON GIFT, SCIENTIFIC LONGEVITY On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of Professor Yuri Dmitrievich Kalinin.
	ONE OF THOSE WITH WHOM THE INSTITUTE STARTED In December the investigator of the Earth ionosphere, Deputy Director of the Institute of Solar and Earth Physics, Candidate Sc. (Physics and Mathematics) V.Kokourov is 70. He is author of more than 170 works devoted mainly to experimental radiophysical investigations of dynamic processes in the lower atmosphere of the Earth.
	WAY TO SUCCESS Anniversary of Tatiana Nikolaevna Gagina, Professor, Doctor Sc. (Biology), Corresponding Member of the Siberian Branch of the High School Academy of Sciences, the oldest (but not aged!) zoologist of Kuzbass and Siberia, author of more than 320 scientific works and 50 articles in central and regional press.
	BIRTH OF SCIENTIFIC STAR A new bright "star" has appeared in the sky. From the sunset up to dawn the people dwelling on the Pacific Ocean shores can watch, as a luminous point, the brightest celestial object after the Moon and the Sirius Star, slowly floats through the sky. The new star is the International Space Station, the greatest technical project in the history of mankind at the cost of $ 60,000,000,000.

	NOT FOR A HOLE IN A WALL-PAPER... December 9 an exhibition of paintings by Inna Chupina has been opened at the "Nika" Art Hall. What is interesting in these works and why they should be seen?
	THE "BEMBIX" INVITING As far as our children are talented one may make sure once again, by seeing the exhibition of works of the pupils of the "BEMBIX" center. The exhibition is cosily placed at the Winter Garden of the House of Scientists. About 10 years this center of aesthetic education for children and teenagers works in the "Right Chomy" microdistrict.
	CUP-TIE OF SIBERIA FOR ROCK-CLIMBING From November 24 to November 26 the final stage of the Cup of Siberia for rock- climbing "ACADEM-2000" has been held at the artificial rock-climbing point constructed by the enthusiasts of the "Cascade" Club in the Universal Sports Complex of the SB RAS, in the Novosibirsk Academgorodok.
