Two Pieces of News, as Usual: a Good One and a Bad One
 
On July 19 a session of the Bureau of the Presidium of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences had been held. 49 scientists were decorated with orders and medals on the occasion of the 275th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Simultaneously, it was announced that financial backing in July would be reduced to 66%. Backing in full volume should be resumed only in August or September.
 
Councils of Junior Scientists at Scientific Centres and Institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
 
The Presidium of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences adopted a resolution providing for the restoration of the system of councils of junior Scientists.
 
In Memory of Pelagheya Yakovlevna Kochina
 
Prof. V.Pukhnachov, one of the disciples of recently deceased hundred-years-old Academician Kochina recollects his mutual work with her and his personal impressions.
 
Catalysis on Molecular Level
 
Academician K. Zamarayev Memorial Conference "Physical Methods for Investigating Catalytic Processes on Molecular Level" had been held at the Institute of Catalysis of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences from June 28 to July 2.
 
A Time for International Symposia
 
This summer two symposia were held at the Institute of Atmospheric Optics (Tomsk). the 6th Symposium "Optics of the Atmosphere and the Ocean" and 13th Symposium "High Resolution Molecular Spectroscopy". Such problems as absorption and scattering of optical waves with gases and aerosols of the atmosphere and sea water, propagation of coherent radiation in random inhomogeneous media, probing of the atmosphere and the ocean, ecological control of air and water had been considered. Scientists from the U. S. A., Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Korea, Czechia, Uzbekistan and Byelarus took part in the conferences.
 
A Great Gathering of Gas-Fitters
 
The 5th International Conference "Natural Gas Pipelines in North-East Asia: Multilateral Collaboration" will take place in Yakutsk (Sakha Republic) on 25th to 27th of July.
 
The Wild Banks of Irtysh River
 
Prof. V.V.Bolotov, Chairman of the Omsk Scientific Centre tells about scientific achievements and administrative innovations of the Centre.
 
A Hard Lot of a Promising Idea
 
Dr. A.Maksimov, a well-known historian of space-flights, considers development of the idea of the Moon expedition using LEM, lunar orbiting module in his article dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the first landing on the Moon. The concept was developed by Prof. John C. Houbolt whose role in the American Moon project is considered in detail. The preceding works by Yu.V.Kondratyuk (A.I.Sharghey), G.E.Ross, and Bill Michael are summarised also.
