	NEWS
	REGIONAL EXPERT COUNCIL FORMED Aiming at realisation of the Agreement between the Russian Humanity Scholar Foundation and the administration of Novosibirsk region on the organising of a contest of projects in the domain of humanities (August 15, 1999), the personnel of the regional expert council for this contest had been adopted by the resolution of the head of Novosibirsk region (October 27, 1999).
	TAKING INTO ACCOUNT NEEDS OF TO-DAY The first item discussed on October 28 at the session of the Presidium of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences was the results of complex revision of the Baikal Joint Institute of Nature Exploitation. The list of problems for scientific collaboration between the Siberian Branch and the Ural and Far Eastern Branches was discussed as well.
	ON-SITE SESSION OF THE SCIENTIFIC COUNCIL OF "SIBERIA" PROGRAMME IN OMSK The delegation of the Siberian Branch consisted of the leading scientists, supervisors of blocks and projects of the programme, members of the Presidium of the Siberian Branch, heads of scientific centres, directors of institutes, and was headed by the Chairman of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Academician N. Dobretsov himself. The session had been accompanied with an exhibition of the completed developments made in the Siberian Branch including an exposition from scientific institutions of the Omsk Scientific Centre as well as of enterprises and organisations of military industry from the Omsk region.
	THE ALL-RUSSIA FORUM: LINES OF EVENTS A week ago the National Economic Forum "East---Siberia---West" finished its work, but the response of public and media to this significant for Siberia event seems to unfold still. It`s not surprising in so far as such a full-scale event hadn`t been seen in Siberia for a long time. Strictly speaking, the hadn`t been organised at all during several years, not counting a recent conference on investment potential of Novosibirsk.
	BETWEEN EAST AND WEST Published are excerpts from the report by Academician N. Dobretsov at the plenary session of the National Economic Forum "East--Siberia--West".
	TO THE BAIKAL FORUM IN GERMANY A large group of Siberian scientists including those from Irkutsk will soon go to Germany to take part in the international Baikal forum. There will be several simultaneous conferences dedicated to the problems of the unique Siberian lake. On November 14 to 18 a conference on Russian-German co-operation on Baikal investigation will take place at the small town of Schnewerdingen. It will be opened with a demonstration of the film "Baikal in Summer and in Winter" shot by German cameramen last year.
	LET`S BEAT SWORDS INTO PLOUGHSHARES In late October Novosibirsk was visited by members of the Council of Managers of the International Scientific and Technological Centre. The delegation is headed by the Chairman of ISTC, Director of the Centre for Investigation of Mundane Security, Livermore National Laboratory, Dr. Ronald F. Lehmann. It is for the first time that such a representative delegation of the Centre numbered more than thirty persons visits Siberia.
	WILL PHYSICS STUMBLE? OR INEVITABILITY OF QUANTUM COMPUTER The Fourth National Conference on Physics of Semiconductors has been carried out under the colours of 275th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

	FESTIVAL "INTERNIT`99" A contest of Russian information resources, corporation cites and personal representations of companies in Internet.
	ART OF OLEG SHELUDYAKOV On November 10 a personal exhibition of young Novosibirsk artist Oleg Sheludyakov will be opened at the House of Scientists (Academic Township). Art of Mr. Sheludyakov is being reviewed by Ivan Kulakov, an artist, scholar and proprietor of Internet-gallery of modern Siberian art.
	VOLLEYBALL IN AN ACADEMIC WAY The volleyball tournament dedicated to the 275th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences took place in the Academic Township on late October. It was really unpredictable both in the number of persons to participate (twenty-four teams, 246 players) and in the level of their masterliness.
