	AT THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE SB RAS April 17 the Annual General Meeting of the SB RAS has actually begun with the sessions of the Joint Scientific Councils of the Branch on the main scientific fields. The basis for the session agendas was formed of the following topics: summarized annualizing information, consideration of the candidatures of the institute directors nominated for elections for the next term, nomination of the leader scientists of the Branch for the elections of the RAS Members at the General Meeting.
	THE "LAVRENTIEV READINGS" AT YAKUTSK Now it is the fourth year, when the Republic Saha (Yakutia) holds the "Lavrentiev Readings". The program of the action includes lectures, Olympiads on mathematics, physics, informatics and chemistry for the schoolchildren, students and young scientists; the Internet Olympiad on informatics; the Conference of Students and Young Scientists. The young people could take part in intellectual competitions and in the brain-ring between the teams of the Higher Education institutions and of the Research Institutes.
	SIBERIAN BIOLOGY FOR XXI CENTURY At the session of the Joint Scientific Council on the Life Sciences, general report by the Council Chairman, academician V.Shumny has been traditionally represented, and elections of the RAS Members have been conducted according to the agenda of the Annual General Meeting of the SB RAS.

	ENTERING THE XXIst CENTURY Scientific session of the Kemerovo Scientific Center of the SB RAS.
	FOR THE WELFARE OF THE SIBERIAN LAND At the exhibition "Science. Education. Novel technologies.", which one has passed at the International Exposition Center "Sibexpocenter" in Irkutsk, the Governor of the region Boris Govorin has handed premiums of 2000 "For the Greatest Contribution in the Science Development and the Solutions of the Social and Economic Problems of the Region": seven Governor prizes. Five of the rates being 20 thousand rubles each and two of ones being 10 thousand rubles each. Among the prizewinners who were titled as "The Irkutsk Region Governor Premium Laureate for Science and Engineering" there is also the author group of the Institute of Solar and Earth Physics of the SB RAS.
	SCIENCE FESTIVAL AT THE NSU The 38th International Scientific Conference "The Student and the Progress in Science and Engineering" has been finished. This year it was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Academician M.A.Lavrentiev, the founder of the Siberian Branch of the RAS.
	YOUNG SCIENTISTS DISCUSS THE PROBLEMS OF THE BOWELS DEVELOPING At the Tomsk Polytechnic University within the framework of celebration of the High School opening centenary, the Academician M.A.Usov 4th International Scientific Symposium of Students, Post- graduates and Young Scientists "Problems of Geology and the Bowels Developing" has been held.

	AGRARIAN PROBLEMATICS AT THE CONFERENCE IN OMSK The third All-Russian Scientific and Practical Conference "Siberian Countryside: History, State of the art, Prospects for Development" has been held in Omsk. The First and the Second Conferences were held in 1996 and 1998.
	VACANCIES
	SOLAR TELESCOPES OF BAIKAL An exotic construction resembling the "A" character at one of the tops of the mountains raising above Listvianka, is easily observable from Baikal. It is like a beacon for ships returning to berth. Slightly below there are familiar white cupolas. These are instruments of the Baikal Astrophysics Observatory of the Institute of Solar and Earth Physics: the Great Solar vacuum telescope for investigation of thin-structured details of the solar atmosphere (the only one in Russia) and the chromosphere telescopes with high spatial resolution.
	HOW TO CONTROL DEFECTS IN CRYSTALS Under rapidly developing miniaturization of the units in solid- state micro- and nanoelectronics, and in moving to the structures of the reduced dimensionality, the necessity to control the reactions between mobile defects and impurities in solids gains the increasing value. The article by Professor V.Bolotov is devoted to the analysis and perspectives of the engineering of defects.
	WARM FLOORS IN... THE STONE AGE Archeology is science about the past. We learn from it that some modern achievements were known for people many thousand years ago. In the article presented here the Chief of the archeological group, Doctor Sc. (History) V.Medvedev tells about new discoveries of the last year season of the field expedition on Amur.
	THESE FANTASTIC GAS HYDRATES On March 13–15 the Indian-Russian Symposium on Gas Hydrates, initiated by the Indian side has been held in Delhi. High-ranking representatives of the Indian Government and industry took part in the Symposium.
	FOR INTERVIEW TO "YUKOS" In the course of two days at the Faculty of Geological Survey and Oil-and-gas Production of the Tomsk Polytechnic University, presentation of the Petroleum Company "YUKOS" (UCOS) was held under the motto "The Career Day". Informing the undergraduate students of the Faculty has become the main aim of the presentation, which one was held, by the way, on the celebration days of the seventh anniversary of the "YUKOS". However in the crowded auditorium one could actually see the students of all of the years. Still and all, the "YUKOS", as one of the leaders of Russian petroleum refining and oil production, is one of the main and promising employers for future geologists and engineers.
	THE BYELORUSSIANS IN SIBERIA That is the title of the recently published book, which one has been prepared within the framework of the project of the co- operation between the National Academy of Sciences of Byelorussia and the Siberian Branch of the RAS. Director of the Institute of History SB RAS, Doctor Sc. (History) V.Lamin and Director of the Institute of History NASB, Doctor Sc. (History) N.Stashkevich have become the General Editors of the book.
	CINEMA WHICH WE SEE NOT OFTEN NOW On August 2000, the International Film Festival "The Human and the Nature" will take place at Irkutsk.
	THE WORLD SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING NEWS
	THE PRESENCE EFFECT A day recently The Interregional Public Foundation "Siberian Center of the Public Initiative Support" (IPF SCPIS) has celebrated the fifth anniversary. Since 1995 it works as a resort center for non-commercial organizations of Novosibirsk and the Novosibirsk Region and has opened simultaneously 11 branches in the West and East Siberia as well as in the Altai Region.
	INTEREST IN THE SIBERIAN AREA The First Secretary of the Denmark Embassy, Christian Dons Christians, who has visited Irkutsk, was interested in the problems of the social and economic development of the Region, in the relationships between the Region and the Center, as well as in national problems and the regional science.
	HIGH AWARDS FOR THE CHORUS OF THE ORTHODOX CHURCH GRAMMAR SCHOOL On March 28 up to April 2, 2000, the International Children Choral Festival "Moscow Sounding" took place at the Capital of Russia. The Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Culture of the RF as well as the Government of the Moscow were the founders of the festival.
	HIGHER, HIGHER AND HIGHER UP! On April 7–9, the Public Championship of the Siberia on Rock- climbing took place at the Universal Sports Complex of the SB RAS. Twelve sport teams of nine Siberian cities and towns, such as Ulan-Ude, Irkutsk, Krasnoyarsk, Tomsk, Novokuznetsk, Kemerovo, Biysk, Novosibirsk and Berdsk have participated in the event.
