POST-CONFERENCE TOUR
We kindly ask participants to indicate your desire to take part in sightseeing tour of St. Petersburg in the attached registration form. Please confirm your wish to participate if you already made an order.

St. Petersburg, founded by Peter The Great in 1703, is justly considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Its museums are famous for their fabulously rich collections of art treasures. There are nearly 50 museums in St. Petersburg, as well as wonderful gardens, parks, and suburbs. It is nearly impossible to see all the places of interest during a short stay in the city, but we hope that our two-day tour will help you to get acquainted with the most famous and unique works of architecture and art.

Tour Schedule
June 10, Sunday Morning The Hermitage
June 10, Sunday Afternoon Petrodvorets Palace
June 11, Monday Morning

Pushkin Palace, Pavlovsk Palace

June 11, Monday Afternoon
Memorial Museum “Savoir on the Blood”, St. Isaac Cathedral, Peter and Paul Fortress, City Tour

The two-days tour is $ 190 US per person including 2 lunches.

Accommodation in the hotel “Sovetskaya” is not included in the tour price. It costs $ 25-30 US per person per night (single) including breakfast and dinner. Double room is $ 41-46 (including breakfast and dinner).

The Hermitage is one of the greatest art museums of the world, located in the Winter Palace (work of Bartholomeo Rastrelli) and adjacent buildings. Its collection presents the development of art and material culture in the West and the East from prehistoric times to the present day. The museum features remarkable collections of paintings, print, and sculpture, as well as architectural fragments, tapestries, carpets, objects d’art, archeological finds, artistic utensils, porcelain, furniture, costumes, coins, medals, unique articles of jewelry, precious metals and stones, displayed in numerous amazing halls.

Petrpodvorets is one of the greatest achievements of national culture, built in early 18th century on the southern shores of the Gulf of Finland as a royal summer residence. Terrace of Great Palace offers a wonderful view over the canal, sea, and world largest Great Cascade composed of 64 fountains and 255 bronze sculptures, crowned by the huge statue of Samson in the center of 21 m high fountain. Upper and Lower Parks, Montplaisir and Marly Palaces, the Hermitage Pavilion, 144 fountains demonstrate the elegant design which is never excessive.

Pushkin is a finest example of a royal family’s country residence. The original stone palace and gardens were built on a small estate some 25 kilometers from the capital between 1717 and 1733 for the Empress Catherine I, wife of Peter the Great. A centerpiece of the complex is Catherine Palace. The greatest Russian architect of baroque period, Bartholomeo Rastrelli, created the design of the building, its ornamentation and interior layout, and oversaw the work of many artisans who had turned the place into a grandiose architectural ensemble set in the midst of huge parks. The town of Pushkin has strong connections with the greatest Russian poet, Alexander Pushkin, who spent his early years here.

Pavlovsk is located some 30 kilometers from St. Petersburg. Amid beautiful parks lies an unique late 18th - early 19th century architectural ensemble. The Palace and park were a gift from the Empress Catherine the Great to her son, the future Emperor Paul I. The history of Pavlovsk as an imperial residence ended with the death of Paul I, who was murdered on March 12, 1801 by his courtiers. The Palace, the pavilions, their interior and their furniture were designed by famous Russian and European architects, painters and sculptors. Halls of the Palace display the largest collection of classical sculpture in Russia outside the Hermitage, as well as a collection of 16th - 18th century paintings.

St. Isaac Cathedral 19th century’s St. Isaac is one of the finest cathedrals in Europe and a unique monument to Russian architecture, art and construction. Built by the architect Auguste Montferrand, St. Isaac Cathedral was the largest building of its time. Of undoubted interest is the main iconostasis, which is made from white marble with malachite and lazurite columns. The cathedral has the largest collection of Russian 19th century mosaics.

Peter and Paul Fortress is the historical center of St. Petersburg, around which the city was built for several decades. It is also a remarkable monument of early 18th century fortification architecture with entirely preserved system of stone and earth works. The foundation stone for the Peter and Paul Fortress was laid by Peter the Great on May 16, 1703 and was intended to be the main defense center for the future capital of the Russian state. For many decades the Peter and Paul Cathedral (architect Domenico Trezini) was used as the burial vault for the Russian emperors.

Church of the Savior on the Spilled Blood was commissioned by Alexander III to memorialize the shocking death of his farther Alexander II, who was killed on this site by a terrorist’s bomb. The drama of the church’s inception more than matches the frenzy of its design. The interiors reportedly are as extravagant as the exterior, with glittering stretches of mosaic from floor to ceiling. The Iconostas is made of multicoloured Italian marbles.

City Tour will completed by the sightseeing of famous Petersburg ensembles such as Palace Square, Summer garden, the Admiralty, Catherine garden, Kasan Cathedral Square, Smolny, Vasil Island. You will be able to see numerous bridges, canals of the “Pearl of the Baltic”. You will be guided to a walk down the main street of the city – Nevskii prospect which keeps all of its previous beauty and elegance.
