Mechanics
This work presents an experimental investigation of non-stationary process of internal wave beams formation during the initial stage of harmonic oscillations of a circular cylinder in a uniformly stratified fluid. The quantitative characteristics of internal wave filed are obtained with a version of syntetic shlieren technique. The technique is based on computer analysis of optical distortion in the images obtained from video-records of a screen through a body of stratified fluid perturbed by a passage of internal waves. The characteristics of transient processes are evaluated via cross-correlation analysis of profiles of wave disturbances. It is shown that the duration of the transient processes essentially depend on the main parameters of the problem. An example of a body motion is given, which shows that in different regions of space in the vicinity of the cylinder the time-scales of the transient processes may differ by several orders of magnitude.
