Globally convergent numerical methods for coefficient inverse problems are in their infant age. This is a very challenging goal due to the ill-posedness and nonlinearity of these problems. Because of these two, the phenomenon of multiple local minima of residual functionals is inherent to coefficient inverse problems. We will present our recent development on this topic including both theory and numerical results. Local minima are avoided because least squares residual functionals are not constructed.
