The technology of developing the scientific portal is described in this paper. Due to the complexity of such a task as portal creation and to the subject diversity of the sites it consists of, we used uniform architectural and designing solutions for all of the portal components. There were defined system’s as well as subject components that could be used repeatedly. The server part of the software is two-layered: the lower layer contains DBMS MySQL and the Apache web server, on the upper layer there is middleware that can operate in Linux as well as Windows. Most of the code is written in PHP and Java.

The work contains the description of the middleware that allows creating a thematic portal. The interface for the portal administrator is built up considering the functions of creators of a site or a portal. It is assumed that site creators fulfill the following functions: expert, applied programmer, designer, and system programmer. The middleware described below is a tool for the work of an expert, designer, and applied programmer.

To build up a dialogue system a tree structure has been chosen. The key element of this structure is a node. Diversity of the node properties determines the capabilities as well as the intelligent system of administering the site’s information resource. Each node has a number of pages related to it and generated by the system’s core from the templates, which determine the geometry of data arrangement over the page.

The data processing system involves scientific and service applications. The sets of toolkits for solving the problems typical of subject fields (mathematical models), designed according to the portal internal requirements, we call scientific applications. As for service applications, they are designed for working with static information and include bibliography supporting tools, terminology thesaurus, internet links archive, user’s guide, electronic textbook, etc. Static page fragment embedded editor, applications for presenting data in a table and graphically and some other belong to general functional applications. Integration of the applications into a portal is done through a special system application.
