A Numerical Study on the Global Monsoon System

Xue F.

Institute of Atmospheric Physics/Chinese Academy of Sciences (Beijing)

In this study, the global monsoon system is defined by the normalized seasonality of the horizontal wind, i. e., the difference of wind between winter and summer by its annual mean. The IAP 9L AGCM developed at Institute of Atmospheric Physics is used to simulate the global monsoon system. The result indicates that the model successfully simulates the monsoon system in the lower troposphere including the classic tropical monsoon, the subtropical monsoon and the temperate-frigid monsoon. Besides, the planetary monsoon in the upper troposphere is also realistically reproduced. On the other hand, the stratospheric monsoon is poorly simualted, a further analysis reveals that this is caused by by the systematic overestimation of the westerly in the model.
