Comparative analysis of allozyme variation and needle structure of natural hybrids between Siberian Stone pine and Siberian Dwarf pine using hybrid indexes was carried out. Seeds and needles of pure species trees and hybrids were collected in delta of Upper Angara, northern Baikal lakeside. Genotypes of P.pumila, P.sibirica and hybrids were determined by means of 29 allozyme loci controlling 16 enzyme systems. For most loci the hybrids had intermediate allele frequencies relative to P. pumila and P. sibirica samples that confirmed hybrid nature of these trees. All hybrids were heterozygous at diagnostic Skdh-2 locus. Hybrids from both parental species were discriminated by Principal Component Analysis of genotypic data. All three classes were successfully discriminated by the first factor, and we used the factor scores as genetic hybrid index means. 7 traits of needle structure were explored in cross-section: width of needles, location of resin canals in mesophyll, the number of resin canals, maximal number of mesophyll cells having wall invaginations, distance between resin canal and abaxial hypoderma, number of additional hypodermal cells and number of additional endodermal cells of resin canals. The number and location of resin canals discriminated P.sibirica and P.pumila and varied among hybrids. Variation of each trait was ranked for 5 meaning classes, from 0 (P.pumila) to 4 (P.sibirica). Hybrid index was calculated as an average rank for all traits of each hybrid and pure species trees. Hybrids were intermediate comparative to P. sibirica and P.pumila for both allozyme and needle structure hybrid indexes. The indexes correlated significantly if pure species were included in analysis. Two groups of hybrids were revealed according to morphological hybrid index: hybrids similar to Siberian Stone pine and hybrids similar to Siberian Dwarf pine. Hybrids composing the first group were close to P. sibirica on allozyme hybrid index, but hybrid indexes in the second group varied greatly. Totally variation of hybrids on needle traits is not corresponding to variation on genetic hybrid index. Future investigation of morphological and genetic variability in P.pumila x P.sibirica hybrids is required.
