Nature conservation databases in Finland

Lindholm T.

Finnish Environment Institute,
Nature and Land Use Division (Helsinki)

The Finnish Environment Institute (FEI) is the national environmental research and development centre of the environment administration. Research and development in the FEI deals with changes in the environment, cause and effect relationships, means of resolving environmental problems and effects of policy measures. FEI is the national environmental information centre and provides expert services and takes care of certain national and international statutory tasks.

Environment Data System of Finland (EDS) is the basic tool for environmental control, monitoring and assessment. It is used by environmental authorities at all levels of organization through the Finnish Environment Network. EDS is also open to other users outside the environment administration. EDS contains, for instance, information about ;
-Water quality . Water resources , Water load , Wastes , Air pollution control, Contamination, Chemicals, Land use, and Nature conservation

Most important databases in nature conservation are:
Nature conservation areas GIS database
Nature conservation programmes GIS database
Nature conservation and landscape valuable bedrock areas database
Natura 2000 database and GIS database
Threatened species (fauna and flora and fungi) database.

Land use is in great deal based on inventory and monitoring data on our environment. The finnish forestry is based on nationwide National forest inventory, which consists of concrete field inventories and remote sensing systems. In practical forestry there pattern based GIS systems which contain forestry and biological data. Moreover they containt also plan of management and use of the forest, In private forests and in state forests there are different systems. Altough these large databases are done mainly for the use of forest resources, they also contain much nature information.

Important databases for nature conservation are GIS pattern databases of nature reserves in Forest and Park service. Nature conservation also needs the information of herbaria and zoological museums in Universities. In the herbarium of the Univesity of Herlsinki there is a large database on vascular plants, which very important in many biodiversity studies.
