Science in the 21st Century: New Obligations
 
The World Conference on Science. The Conference took place in Budapest, June 26 to July 1. The Chairman of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Academician N. V. Dobretsov tells about the events of the Conference. One of the official documents of the Conference is published also.
 
Academician S.K.Godunov is 70
 
The Presidium of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences congratulated Academician S. K. Godunov on the occasion of his 70th anniversary.
 
1300 Seminars on Physical Chemistry and Chemical Physics
 
On 30th of June, a regular Physico-chemical seminar was held at the Institute of Chemical Kinetics and Combustion of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. That weekly seminar works for almost 40 years. It was the 1300th meeting of the scientists of the Institute for discussing their scientific results.
 
The International Conference on Problems of Stabilisation and Development of Agro-Industry
 
The international Conference "Problems of Stabilisation and Development of Agricultural Production of Siberia, Mongolia, and North Kazakhstan in 21st century" will be held at the House of Scientists of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Agricultural Academy (Krasnoobsk) from 20th to 23rd of July. The Conference had been organised by the Siberian Branch of the Russian Agricultural Academy, the Mongolian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and the National Academic Centre of Agrarian Studies of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
 
Enlightenment against Prejudice, an International Action in Novosibirsk
 
On July 13 an exhibition "The Pale of Settlement and Its Aftermath. The Life and Fate of Jews in Russia" had been opened at the Novosibirsk Art Gallery. It is hold in the framework of the international action "Enlightenment against Prejudice" and is the property of the Open Society Institute (The Soros Foundation). The purpose of the exhibition is to represent the history of Jew-hatred and peculiarities of contemporary anti-Semitism.
 
Science As a Key to Solving Complicated Problems
 
On June 5, Novosibirsk representatives of the Centre for North Eastern Asia Studies of Tohoku University (Japan) held a press conference. Prof. Akeo Misaki spoke to the public.
 
A New Generation of Accelerators
 
From 1971, the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences produces ELV accelerators possessing the wide range of electron beam energy. In 1999, an accelerator of the new generation, ELV-12, will be constructed. The energy of its beam will reach 0.6 to 1 MeV with the beam power of 400 kW.
 
Entrance Exams at the Novosibirsk University
 
To enter the Mechanics and Mathematics Faculty this year one needed to get "fives" in the course of each of the two examinations.
 
Youth and Society, an International Dialogue
 
The Week of German Culture that had taken place in Siberia concerned not only Culture, Art, and Science in general, but also pedagogical science in particular. A workshop on social pedagogy and social work was held at the Novosibirsk State Pedagogical University in the framework of the Week. Reports were made by the guests from Germany as well as by Novosibirsk pedagogues.
 
A New Institute in the University
 
The mathematical faculty of the Irkutsk State University has been transformed lately into the Institute of Mathematics and Economics. Prof. Oleg Vasilyev became its first rector.
 
Glossators Are Wanted for Interpreting the Letter of the Law
 
Unification of geological terms and concepts can play an important role for legislation. This is a topic of the talk with the Head of the Division of Law Problems in Oil and Gas Industry (Tyumen Scientific Centre), Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Prof. M. Kleandrov.
 
The Treasure Hunters
 
Last Winter Mr. Chris Webber from Portland, Oregon, had published "Treasure 3", a new collection of compositions by schoolchildren from the U. S. and Japan. His next project will involve works by pupils from the Novosibirsk School No. 130.
 
The Prize of Science in Siberia Won by Yekaterinburg Tennis-Players
 
The 7th tennis competition of the Academic Township involved 250 participants from Siberia and near foreign countries.
