The 14th of August is marked with the 70th anniversary of Prof. Argenta Antoninovna Titlynova, Doctor of Biology, professor of the Novosibirsk State University, the founder of the laboratory of biogeocenology of the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry.
 
THE URGENT PROBLEMS OF INFORMATIONAL BIOLOGY DISCUSSED
 
"Urgent Problems of Informational Biology" was the name of a conference, which was held a week ago. It was organised by the laboratory of theoretical biology of the Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and linked to the tenth anniversary of the laboratory. Foreign participants were represented by one of the most wide-known specialists in this domain, Prof. Chris Overtone, the director of the Centre of Bioinformatics of the Pennsylvania State University, a major scientific institution.
 
REALISATION THROUGH CO-ORDINATION?
 
A round-table meeting "Problems of co-ordination of the activity of non-profit institutions in the field of ecological education" took place recently at the information and methodical centre of Novosibirsk Region administration for work with social unions. The meeting had been organised by the Discussion Club of the Novosibirsk State University assisted by the Siberian Centre for Supporting Social Initiatives and the Region Administration.

Presented to the attention of the reader is the Hallim Lecture of the President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Prof. Lu Yungxiang. The lecture had been read at the Seoul University in April. The honorary right to read a Hallim Lecture is granted to prominent scientists who were elected Foreign Members of the Academy of Sciences and Technologies of the Republic of Korea. Such an honour was paid last year to Academician N. Dobretsov.
 
NEW STEPS OF THE EUROPEAN UNION TOWARDS STRENGTHENING OF SCIENCE
 
Early 1999 had been marked with a most outstanding event during last decades, emission of European currency named euro. However, for those who are engaged in science and new technologies another event was of no less importance. It is the beginning of the new fifth programme of the European Union for supporting science and technologies, F5.
 
THE INTERNATIONAL UBSUNUR SYMPOSIUM
 
On August 22 to 28 in Kyzyl there will be held the 6th International Ubsunur Symposium "Central Asia in 21st Century and Its Steady Development". Originally it was planned to perform the Symposium at the same time in Mongolia, but due to the most hard natural situation in the neighbouring country, it was transferred to the capital of Tuva. From the Possible to the Real Is it possible to service scientists of the Academic Township with advantage if only one obligatory copy of each scientific book is available at the State Public Scientific and Technological Library of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences?
 
HAIL, YOUTH! HAIL, STRANGE NEW WONDROUS TRIBE!
 
More than 500 schoolchildren who had won regional Olympiads in mathematics, physics and chemistry came from Siberia, Far East and Kazakhstan to the Novosibirsk Academic Township to take part in the traditional Summer School. On August 9, the 38th School has been opened at the House of Scientists of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The Summer School is only two years younger than the Novosibirsk State University. The 40th anniversary of the latter will be celebrated this September.
 
 
INSPIRATION BORN BY THE PAST
 
A rare coincidence of a subject of scholastic interest and a hobby played a fruitful role in creations of Dr. Vladislav Yesipov, a scholar from Irkutsk. While studying painting and sculpture of the past, he felt a wish to pronounce his own word in art. And he has succeeded. It is corroborated by several personal exhibitions. Two of them took place in London.
 
A FAIR WIND TO YOU, "BRIGANTINA"!
 
The "Brigantina" camp had been organised many years ago. It collected together amateurs of all the kinds of water sports: yachtsmen, divers, boatsmen etc. Due to severe financial conditions, it had been closed up. Last year the administration of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Joined Trade Union Committee made there best to revive the club.
