RESOLUTION OF THE PRESIDIUM OF THE RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES
 
Concerning contests of scientific projects and works by young scientists and university students
 
CO-OPERATION BETWEEN THE RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES AND THE DEUTSCHE FORSCHUNGSGESELLSCHAFT
 
On June 3, 1999, the Agreement between those institutions had been signed in Moscow. The complete texts of the agreement and mutual recommendations for its fulfilment are being published.
 
UNDER THE SIGN OF BOOLEAN ALGEBRAS
 
Dr. Pavel Alayev, Senior Research Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics in Novosibirsk, was awarded the A.I.Maltsev Prize for young scientists.
 
THE ONE WHO WALKED HAD GET HIS OWN ROAD
 
It was only in the last years that a curtain of mystery hiding the completely secret institution at the town of Koltsovo near Novosibirsk was raised up. Nevertheless, this institution had been widely known as "Vector". An illustrated report about the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the State Scientific Centre for Virology and Biotechnology is presented.

The plenary lecture had been read by Prof. Mary Lion, the honorary chairman of the symposium who discovered the phenomenon of X-activation.
 
UBSU-NUR, A FIELD FOR THE STUDIES OF BIOSPHERE
 
The Sixth International Ubsunur Symposium "Central Asia and Asiatic Continent in the 21st Century. Sustainable Development and Studies of Biosphere" was held at the city of Kyzyl.
 
 
ACADEMICAL INFORMATION CENTRE IN OMSK
 
A solemn ceremony of opening the "Academical" reading-room had been held at the Omsk Region Library. Rhe reading-room is supplied with Internet facilities, and thus an access to the complete texts of electronic magazines of the largest foreign publishing houses may be obtained. Catalogues of the leading academic library of Siberia are accessible as well.
 
SCIENTIFIC POLICY IN ASIA
 
The International Symposium "Scientific Policy in Asia" took place in Irkutsk. Leaders of scientific communities from ten Asian countries attended the symposium.
 
 
METHANE FROM GAS-HYDRATE DEPOSITS
 
Prof. M.Anisimov (the Institute of Catalysis of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences) poses a question of creating a powerful integration basis in the Branch for investigations of methane hydrates.
 
SIBERIAN MINI-PIG, A NEW BIOLOGICAL MODEL
 
Many of the successes of modern biology and medicine were achieved by virtue of availability and use of laboratory animals, especially pigs. Senior Research Fellow I. Gorelov tells about activities aimed to conservation and improvement of the first flock of national experimental midget pigs at the Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
