Leading Researcher of the Institute of Geography of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Dr. B. Bogoyavlensky is 75. He is a restless student of Siberian regions and has a title of the Honorary Land-surveyor. Dr. Bogoyavlensky is a renowned and highly qualified specialist in the fild of general, topical and atlas cartography.
 
"GEOGRAPHY IS EARTH`S PHILOSOPHY"
 
At the Institute of Geography of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences autumn is a season of jubilees. Director of the Institute, Academician Vladimir Vasilievich Vorobyov is on the eve of his 70th anniversary. He occupies this position for many years and works fruitfully. Deputy Director, Dr. Alexander Antipin had celebrated his 50th anniversary some time before.
 
THE THOUSANDTH LESSON AT YANENKO`S SCHOOL
 
4 p. m. on Tuesday is a sacred time for researchers of the Institute of Computing Technologies of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. At that time the "Information-Computing Technologies" Seminar begins its work. On the 5th of October participants of the seminar had gathered for the thousandth time.

SPECIALISTS IN NUCLEAR PHYSICS GATHERED AT LISTVYANKA
 
Autumn, the season of "eyes` enchantment" (A. Pushkin), at the township of Listvyanka on Baikal shores, had come into memories of nuclear physicists due to the Fourth International Symposium "Research of Relativistic Electrons in Periodical Structures", RREPS-99, that took place there. The Symposium had been organised by the Scientific Research Institute of Nuclear Physics and the Physical Department of the Tomsk Polytechnic Institute.
 
THE "COMPUTER PARALLEL"
 
On early September the town of Pushkin (Leningrad Region) met scientists from 22 countries of the world who came to PaCT-99 conference. It is the fifth issue in the series of international PaCT conferences (Parallel Computing Technologies). This one had been organised by the Division of Software for Multiprocessor Computing Systems of the Institute of Computing Mathematics and Mathematical Geophysics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

"THE CENTRAL POINT IS CREATING COMPETITIVE TECHNOLOGIES"
 
"One has to formulate problems, not to make progress reports." These words were said at the opening of the Conference "Trends of Development and Efficiency Enhancement of Electric and Electro-magnetic Techniques for Investigation of Oil Wells." The conference had been organised by the Institute of Geophysics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Novosibirsk Scientific and Industrial Enterprise for Geophysical Instruments "Luch" with the assistance of the Ministry of Fuel and Power Engineering of the Russian Federation.
 
MAPPING CO-AUTHORSHIP OF NOVOSIBIRSK SCIENTISTS
 
Globalisation of scientific activities reveals itself in the broadening of collaboration of scientists from different cities, regions, countries. One of the indicators of such co-operation is co-authorship in scientific papers (Meadows, 1998).

On September 13 to 18, 1999, there had been the Baikal School in Fundamental Physics "Radiation and Field Interaction with Matter" in Irkutsk.

White domes of solar telescopes on the background of blue summits of Sayany mountains -- this photo had been published in scientific magazines all over the world and became a symbol in its own way of the mightiness of human thought aimed to the summits of knowledge.
 
FIRES IN SIBERIAN TAIGA
 
The total mass of organic material yearly burned in the course of forest fires is exceedingly high. If an effective strategy and tactics for controlling fires would not be elaborated in the shortest time, this mass would increase to 1 billion tons. International co-operation is concentrated around this problem also. For more than 40 years the problem has been investigated in Krasnoyarsk. From the first days after transferring of the Forestry Institute to that city in 1958, the scientists were faced the study of forest fires.
 
RADIOLOGICAL MONITORING ON YENISEI RIVER
 
The tenth radio-ecological expedition on Yenisei river is over. It had been organised by the Krasnoyarsk Scientific Centre. The main aim of the expedition was compiling data-base of radio-nuclide contents inside the components of river and basin ecosystems in the nearest influence zone of the Mining-Chemical Factory (MCF). The village of Atamanovo had been chosen as a place for expedition headquarters.
 
THE "OB-99" EXPEDITION
 
The complex "Ob-99" expedition of 1999 had been organised and accomplished according to the propositions of several directors of institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and with the assistance of the Presidium of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Different specialists of the water-atmospheric trend of investigation of the institutes of the Siberian Branch united at the expedition. Those were physicists, hydrochemists, geologists, hydrogeologists, biogeochemists, soil scientists as well as specialists from Germany.
 
THE LAW ON THE BAIKAL-AMUR RAILROAD:
THE CONCEPTION FROM IRKUTSK ADOPTED  
By the end of September, the State Duma adopted the law "On special economic areas of the Baikal- Amur railroad." It had been changed dramatically after an on-site session in Irkutsk. Propositions of Irkutsk economists had been taken into account.

THE "GOLDEN VALLEY" FOR THE THIRD YEAR
 
On September 25 to 26, a children`s tournament in ping-pong took place at the Academic Township. Its name is "Golden Valley". The competition had been organised by the Association of Organisations for Physical Culture and Sports of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Public Sport Council of the Novosibirsk Scientific Centre.
 
HE WAS A BORN GEOGRAPHER...
 
It is a month that Prof. Valery Sergeyevich Mikheyev, an outstanding scientist in the field of geography had passed. He was the head of the Laboratory of Aero-Space Techniques of Investigation of the Institute of Geography of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
