	THE VOYEVODSKY MEMORIAL PRIZE GIVEN TO NETHERLANDISH SCIENTIST PROF. ARNOLD HOFF On October 22, a joint session of the scientific council of the Institute of Chemical Kinetics and Combustion and the International Tomographic Centre took place at the conference hall of the Institute of Chemical Kinetics and Combustion, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It was dedicated to the transmitting of the Academician V.V.Voyevodsky Memorial Prize.
	THE LIFE DEDICATED TO GEOLOGY This year Prof. Gheorgi Vladimirovich Pinus (1909--1983), Doctor of Geology and Mineralogy, Merited Scientist of the R.S.F.S.R., a prominent petrologist, would be 90. His creative biography had been connected with geology till his last days.
	"I`VE GOT FREEDOM INSTEAD..." Prof. Serghei Krasilnikov, Doctor of History, Deputy director of the Institute of History, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, is 50. His birthday coincides with the Memorial Day of the Victims of Political Repression, as if the Fate itself managed to predetermine his field of research. On that day he usually reads lectures at schools, takes part in other actions of "Memorial" Society. Today he is the guest of our weekly.
	THE ROAD TO NOOSPHERE, OR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT The interest to the future of mankind had been unceasing both in European and Eastern philosophical traditions. Nowadays, a need of philosophical comprehending of the entity is being felt with a special sharpness. The concept of noosphere, in particular, might play an important role in the quest for a new system of values, in emerging of planetary consciousness. This concept had been elaborated by Academician Vladimir Ivanovich Vernadsky (1863--1945) and found its continuation in the notion of sustainable development by Academician Valentine Afanasievich Koptyug (1931--1997).
	"INFORMATION SOCIETY TECHNOLOGIES" IN NOVOSIBIRSK On October 20, 1999, a regional information day according to the European Programme IST ("Information Society Technologies") had been held at the Joint Institute of Informatics, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It had been organised with the assistance of the Innovation and Technological Centre of "Novosibirsk" Technopark.
	THE FIRST WORKING DAY OF THE NATIONAL ECONOMIC FORUM "EAST---SIBERIA---WEST" On October 26, the National Economic Forum "East---Siberia---West" had been opened solemnly at the exhibition pavilion of the Siberian Market. The forum included the scientific and practical conference "Export Potentials of Siberia" and the International Industrial Exhibition "Siberia: Export-Import-99".
	LINES INTO THE EARTH`S BIOGRAPHY An expedition including researches of the laboratory of petrogenesis and ore-carrying rocks and the laboratory of geodynamics and palaeomagnetism, Institute of geology, Siberian Branch of the Russsian Academy of Sciences, returned from steppes of Kazakhstan. Our correspondent L. Yudina asked the member of the expedition team D. Mitrokhin to tell about tasks and results of the scientific work in the field.
	THAT`S HOW MINERALS ARE DISCOVERED... "It`s like gambling," confesses the discoverer of five new minerals, researcher from the Irkutsk Institute of Earth`s Crust Leonid Reznitsky. "One who at least once found his mineral will search for new ones for all his life. The history of each finding is wonderful in its own way".
	IMPRESSIONS FROM THE ARTICLE "LIGHT AND SHADOWS BEHIND THE ROENTGEN SCREEN" In 1982, the first in our country design of digital Roentgen set-ups for medical need began et the Institute of Nuclear Physics, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, on the initiative of the Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences V.Sidorov. Nowadays ten set-ups made at INP are working successfully in various places of Russia, from Kaliningrad to Krasnoyarsk. Other 50 set-ups manufactured at the factory in the city of Oryol are also in operation. Nevertheless, L.Veremyanina from the "Vecherny Novosibirsk" newspaper tried (rather awkwardly) to discredit the apparatus. On September 10, "Vecherny Novosibirsk" published her article praising an apparatus named KARS and swearing black is white. She states that the apparatus made at the INP is unknown to the specialists, that it doesn`t work anywhere and even hints at some mysterious powers supporting that set-up...
	THE SCIENTIFIC COUNCIL. THE 15th OF OCTOBER The session of Scientific Council of the Institute of Laser Physics was held under the chairmanship of the director of the Institute Academician S.Bagayev.
	SIBERIAN COSMETOLOGISTS CAME INTO PLAY Producing of cosmetics, as everyone who uses it knows, crossed the framework of hygiene and became a business of scientific background. To participate in it is a good occupation both for research institutes and wealthy industrial corporations. A strong corroboration of this idea is an international symposium held this month in Sophia, Capital of Bulgaria. The symposium had been dedicated to the cosmetics and tooth-pastes and organised by Bulgarian National Association for Perfumery and Cosmetics. Specialists from Belgium, Germany, Finland, the United Kingdom, Italy, U. S. A., and Russia took part in the symposium.

	A SCHOOL WHERE EVERYBODY SPEAKS ENGLISH In September, 1961, there were organised first specialised English schools in Russia, those in Moscow, Leningrad, and Academic Township near Novosibirsk.
	GRANDMA TAISIYA, A METAL CUTTER One of the persons working at the experimental Workshop of the Institute of Nuclear Physics is Taisiya Nikolayevna Spirina. She had never been given any prizes (not saying of the State Prizes!), but she is a unique person. She is 81 years old, but she still works!
	VETERANS MET TOGETHER In October there was a traditional feast at the Institute of Thermophysics, a meeting of the veterans and persons retired from the Institute. The party had been organised by the Council of Veterans with the active participation of the direction and trade-union committee of the Institute.
