	UNVEILING THE MYSTERIES OF IONOSPHERE The oldest associate of the Institute of Solar and Earth Physics, prominent expert in middle atmosphere and ionosphere, Doctor Sc. (Physics and Mathematics) Lev Shchepkin is 70.
	IN WAKE OF INTERWEEK Candidate Sc. (History), Assistant Professor of the Department of the History of Russia of NSU Aleksei Borzenkov will celebrate his 50-th anniversary on January, 15, 2000.
	TOMSK INSTITUTE OF PETROCHEMISTRY IS 30 The Institute of Petrochemistry of the Siberian Branch of RAS will celebrate its 30-th anniversary in January, 2000. Special jubilee scientific session dedicated to the date, “Achievements of the petrochemistry of the 30-th year history of the Institute: Results and Prospective”, will be held on January, 18 – 21.
	OIL AS A CENTER OF ATTRACTION "This year we will celebrate not only the anniversary of the Institute of Petrochemistry, but also the jubilee of its Director, Doctor Sc. (Technology) L. Altunina" - these are words from the letter written by the Scientific Secretary of IP SB RAS I. Savinova. Lyubov' Konstantinovna Altunina has celebrated the jubilee in the end-November. We have tried to interview her, but she was on leave to Vietnam at this time, so we were forced to do with the academic info with the lyric title "Lady of the Oil Fields". Lyubov' Konstantinovna has promised to meet us and to talk about all problems during the earliest visit to Novosibirsk. We have met just on the New Year's eve.
	VACANCIES
	“HOT” PROJECTS ARE SUPPORTED BY FOUNDATIONS In this year, the budgetary funds of the Institute of Geology of the Buryatian Scientific Center of SB RAS were little more than 3.5 million rubles, but the total inflow was about 10 million rubles. Additional financial support has come from RFBR and INTAS projects, programs of the Ministry of Science and the Ministry of Education of RF, contracts with joins-stock companies and public institutions. However, the Federal Programme “Social and Economical Development of the Republic of Buryatia” is of special importance.
	FUNDAMENTAL PROBLEMS OF THE MATERIAL SCIENCE OF SEMICONDUCTOR SILICON This was the title of the Integration Programme implemented in 1997-99 by the combined efforts of seven institutes of the Siberian Branch, including those located in Novosibirsk: Institute of Semiconductor Physics, Institute of Thermophysics, Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, Institute of Hydrodynamics, as well as the institutes from Irkutsk: Institute of Geochemistry and Institute of Organic Chemistry.
	SUCCESSFUL DEFENCES The Dissertation Council of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography was in session in the last days of the passing 1999, December, 23-24. The session considered 6 dissertations competing for the scientific degree of the Candidate Sc. (History) with the specialization in Archaeology and Ethnography.
	TSU HAS GOT MOST AWARDS 2-nd International All-Siberia Innovation Forum and the supplementary exhibitions were held in Tomsk.
	SCIENCE WRITING WORKSHOP This International Russian-US Workshop was held in St. Petersburg in the end-May, 1999. The Russian partners included St. Petersburg Union of Scientists (L. Borkin) and St. Petersburg European University (N. Vakhtin), and the US side was represented by American Association for the Advancement of Science (E.J. Kirk).
