	CONGRATULATIONS ON THE OCCASION OF THE DAY OF RUSSIAN SCIENCE February 8, 2000 marks the Day of Russian Science. This date (instead of the previous one) has been established by the Presidential Decree of June 7, 1999 in order “to follow the historical traditions and in celebration of 275th anniversary of the creation of the Russian Academy of Sciences .” It was February 8, when Peter the First has signed the Decree of the foundation of the Academy of Sciences.

	THE MEETING OF THE PRESIDIUM OF SB RAS
	GENERAL MEETING OF THE YSC OF SB RAS General meeting of the Yakutsk Scientific Center of the Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences was held on January, 27. The Chairman of the Presidium of the YSC of SB RAS, Corresponding Member of RAS Yu. Urzhumtsev has addressed the meeting with the report “On the results of the activities of Yakutsk Scientific Center in 1999”.
	COMING ELECTIONS According to Ch. 61 of the Statute of the Siberian Branch, the Presidium of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences has issued the Resolution on the election of the of the Directors of the research institutes of the Branch.

	THE FAVORITE OBJECT—“BAL’BIANI RINGS” February 9 marks the anniversary of Doctor Sc. (Biology), Professor of Novosibirsk State University, Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, founder of Siberian scientific school of cytogenetics and the laboratory of cellular biology of the Institute of Cytology and Genetics of SB RAS Iya Ivanovna Kiknadze.
	THE INSPIRATION BORN BY A WORD It is impossible not to fell in love with Baikal, if you would hear the narrative of the Head of Exhibition Section of the Baikal Museum of Irkutsk Scientific Center of SB RAS, Honored Culture Worker of Russia Valentina Ivanovna Galkina. She is well-known to all local people. For 40 years, Valentina Ivanovna works in museum and carries nearly everyday’s excursions.
	THE LOWEST ACTION PRINCIPLE During the late fall, especially, in November, it was impossible to reach the Institutes by phone. At best, you will hear kind apologies—we have a general inspection, all people are busy, come again tomorrow. The Institute of Thermophysics and its Director, Doctor Sc. (Physics & Mathematics) Sergei Vladimirovich Alekseenko have passed all stages of general inspection. In addition, in accordance with common procedure, the Director has made a reporting address at the meeting of the Presidium of the Siberian Branch RAS. Right after these events, we have met, so to say, on the eve of transitional Year 2000.
	THE DIAMONDS AND THE REFORMS: THE COMBINATION EXPERIENCE Our newspaper has already made numerous presentations about the laboratory of the formation of diamond fields of the Institute of Mineralogy and Petrography SB RAS, its staff, and their unusual scientific results.
	HUMANITIES IN SIBERIA. PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS 1-st All-Siberian Scientific and Practical Conference “Humanities in Siberia. Problems and Prospects” supported by the “Open Society Institute” (Soros Foundation) was held in the NSU on January 28-29. It has been organized by NSU, SB RAS, NSTU.
	SIBERIAN ASPECT OF MEDICAL GENETICS The traditional conference was held at the Research Institute of Medical Genetics of the Tomsk Scientific Center of SB RAMS. The conference has outlined the results of the research in 1998-1999.
	VACANCIES
	POWERFUL ANTISEPTIC TO BE PRODUCED IN IRKUTSK Pilot plant for the commercial production of “Anavidin” is built in the Irkutsk Institute of Chemistry.
	GAS FLAMES IN THE INERT POROUS MEDIA The important stage of the research into the new stationary conditions of the distribution of gas flames in the inert porous media has been completed at the laboratory of Professor V. Babkin from the Institute of Chemical Kinetics and Combustion SB RAS.
	CARBON CRYSTALS OF UNUSUAL FORM The investigations of the new and unusual, so-called allotropic form of carbon—fullerenes—are rapidly developing are of the modern science.

	NOT A JUBILEE On January 21, the Specialized Educational and Scientific Center of the Novosibirsk State University which includes the Physical and Mathematical School celebrated 37-th anniversary since the beginning of the first classes.
