The Mathematics Department of Novosibirsk State University, the Sobolev Institute of Mathematics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Science, the Foundation for the Mathematics Department, and other academic institutions plan to organize the International Congress ``Mathematics in the XXI Century: The Role of the Mathematics Department of Novosibirsk University in Science, Education, and Business''

THE GOAL OF THE CONGRESS:

  1. realization of the role and the place of mathematics and mathematical education in the modern society;
  2. orientation of public opinion towards recognition of the domineering role of mathematics;
  3. support of international co-operation, strenghtening the connection between graduates of the MMD of NSU.

Conference Topics:

  1. Foundational and philosophical problems of pure and applied mathematics;
  2. The perspectives of applications of mathematics in industry, economics, etc.;
  3. Mathematics and Information technologies,
  4. Business,management and mathematics;
  5. The role of mathematical education (in ordinary school and universities);
  6. Mathematical Department: yesterday, today, and tomorrow;
  7. Novosibirsk Akademgorodok and Mathematics.

Registration:

Participants are invited to submit their applications and be electronically registered on the Web-page of the Organizing Committee up to May 15, 2003. Participants with no access to Internet are invited to recieve registration form by e-mail by request at Address of the Organizing Committee mmf@math.nsc.ru (with subject=letter_Kongress).

We invite you to discuss the role of mathematics in the contemporary world at our forum.
As a starting point, we suggest the article "A Basis for New Realtionship between Mathematics and Society" by Prof. Jean Pierre Bourguignon. The article is taken from "Mathematics Unlimited - 2001 and Beyond" (Springer, 2000) and, by our opinion, contains very important thoughts about mathematics and the tasks of mathematical society. The author gave us his kind permission to translate the article into Russian and to place it in the Internet.

Registration fee

The registration fee is 500 roubles and should be paid in cash upon registration. This includes participant’s kit and the welcome fourchet on June 25.

Registration

Registration will be organized on June 24 at the main building of the NSU from 15:00 to 19:00 and on June 25 at the foyer of the House of Scientists from 9:00 to 11:00.

How to get to the congress site

ATTENTION! Due to reparation at the Novosibirsk hydroelectric station, the only way to cross the bridge is by feet.
Therefore, if you arrive at the Tolmachevo airport, the better way to get to Akademgorodok is to go through the center of Novosibirsk.
You can choose bus 122, 722, or 1122 to get to the main railway station or bus 711 or 1211 to get to the main bus station of Novosibirsk.

At the railway station, take a (small) bus 15 or 1015.
At the bus station, take bus 8, 1022, 1075, 1015, or 15.

If you prefer not to go through the center of Novosibirsk, take bus 808 at Tolmachevo and go to the levee. Next, you cross the bridge by feet (do not forget to collect you baggage!) and take bus 23 or 41. Be careful: bus 23 and mikrobus 1223 are not the same! The terminal station of bus 808 in Akademgorodok is near the hotel for morning departures (at 4:40 and 5:40) only. All other departures are from the hydroelectric station.
If the above is too complex for you, just take a taxi. This will cost about 300 roubles.

If you arrive at the Severnyi airport, take trolleybus 2 to the main railway station or bus 711 or 1211 to the main bus station.

If you arrive at the Seyatel’ railway station, take bus 7 or 28.

In any case, get off at the terminal station, called “Tsvetnoi proezd”. It remains to walk to the hotel or to the NSU along Vesennii proezd, which will take less than 5 minutes.
