Republic Buryatia, the capital of which is Ulan-Ude, occupies a mountainous area east of Lake Baikal, known as Transbaikalia (its area is 351 thousand sq.km, its population 1049 thousand people). Four fifth of its territory is covered with forest. Mining industry, production and processing of non-ferrous metals and non-metallic minerals, machine-building, air-craft, woodworking, pulp-and paper, food and consumer goods industries, as well as agriculture, fishery, fox and mink farms are the main sources of economy of Buryatia. |
