The Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS SB) is a regional self-governing and statesupported association of research and auxiliary organizations, museums, pilot plants, and services of the Russian Academy of Sciences, located in Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Kemerovo, Omsk, Tomsk, Tyumen, Chita regions, in Altai and Krasnoyarsk territories, and in Buryat, Gorno-Altai, Sakha (Yakut) and Tuva Republics.

As a scientific community, the Siberian Branch, according to its Charter, aims at obtaining advanced knowledge of the principal laws of Nature and society, and to apply this knowledge to practical purposes. To achieve these goals, Siberian Branch, together with the higher school:

• is conducting basic and engineering research in natural and humanitarian sciences in order to solve the most important scientific problems, as well as to facilitate the development of Siberia;
• is introducing new technologies and knowledge into the national economy;
• is training highly skilled researchers, first of all for Siberia;
• promotes worldwide international scientific cooperation.
